It’s very discouraging that there are many people wishing others a ‘Happy’ Memorial Day.  I could understand somewhat if these were all generated from outside the US, but even in America, the vast majority of citizens don’t understand the holiday.  Most think it’s just another day for firing up the grill, drink’n a beer and enjoying the day off..  Another significant percentage get the remembrance part correct, but think it applies to anyone who has passed away.  When in reality, the holiday is for remembering the military men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty to protect each and every American’s rights and freedoms.  Yes, this is the other half of Veteran’s Day.  The half where, instead of honoring those veterans that are still with us, we take a moment out of our busy lives to remember those who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying today should be 100% somber and down hearted.  I’m all in support of CELEBRATING their lives and their accomplishments, but please be mindful and respectful of the those that protected your ability to celebrate.

It’s very sad to me (a veteran) that the ONE holiday set aside for this remembrance still leaves those it’s intended to honor completely forgotten.
