Our smart thermostats have been working GREAT! So well, that our buddy David Bott from Outside Our Bubble decided he’d like them installed in his coach too! In classic Outside Our Bubble style, we opted to perform the installation LIVE! I’ve updated the original posting with the video, and I’m including it here for your convenience!

Michael, would that thermostat work in ou 5th wheel?

    Hello Laura,
Most likely, yes. There are some systems which cannot be easily replaced though. For example, if you remove your existing thermostat from the wall and it’s connected via a telephone style cable (wide, flat cable with a phone jack on the end), then that will not be replaceable using this method, at least, not to my knowledge. However, if your thermostat has a hand full of individual wires plugged into it, then this will likely work.

    Hope this helps!

Michael love your projects and inventions. I have a unique problem with my Tuscany and was wondering if you could help me? You seem to really understand how these systems work. I have the same RV Comfort Thermostat with two zones. Everything works great (AC/heat pumps and gas furnace) except that our room (zone) temperature sensors are reversed–its maddening. If I cut and reverse the two green wires with the white stripe inside the RV Comfort thermostat will that reverse the zone temperature sensors to what they should be? It’s confusing because the schematic shows the temp sensor wires going up to a control box in the plenum of the roof heat pump. Any suggestions?

    Hello Geno,
I’m not sure I 100% understand what you have going on. You say you have two zones, but the temp sensor is reversed. Is it that you have two thermostats, but the temperature sensor for one room is read and used for control of the *other* heat pump? If so, are your two thermostats located physically close to each other?

The wires normally do run to the roof control unit, then those are connected down the thermostat wire. However, if the two thermostats are close to each other ( side by side being the easiest ), you could swap the green wires from one to the other.

It also sounds like maybe your one thermostat handles both zones. If that’s the case, you can definitely swap the wires between the two sensor inputs on the back of the thermostat to clear things up.

If I’ve completely missed the picture, please let me know. I’m happy to help if I can.

    Thanks, and best of luck!

Michael that is correct–the sensors are not close together–our coach is 41′–one sensor is in the very back (bedroom) and the other is up front right above the couch. The zone 1 (front of coach) thermostat controls work exactly as they should with the zone 1 (front) heat pump and gas furnace. Same thing with zone 2 (bedroom), the controls on the thermostat work as they should–they control the rear heat pump and rear gas furnace. But the command to turn on heat or cool is being driven by the the opposite (wrong) thermistor sensor. The zone 1 temp LCD display is actually the temp in the bedroom and the zone 2 LCD display is the temp in the front of the coach. Obviously the thermistors must have been cross wired during the manufacturing process–it has never worked right. We didn’t really notice it until we started closing the bedroom door–when we had the grandkids on board or want to keep our cat out of the bedroom. We would come out of a nice warm bedroom to a cold front coach where the temp showed 72 up front and 60 in the bedroom. Finally I used a hair dryer to validate my suspicions that the thermistors are cross wired. I just don’t know which wires to switch in the RVComfort.zc thermostat. You have a beautiful HD photo of the inside of it on your web page and so I thought you might know if this can be accomplished inside the thermostat itself and if so, which wires to switch? I have scoured the internet for info but unfortunately no joy.

        Hello Geno,
I’ll email you shortly to get some pictures of the thermostat.

        Thanks,
        Michael

Hi Michael we have a 2010 Allegro Bus, it has one thermostat that controls all three zones. Is it possible to add a programmable thermostat to Thai system.

          Hi David,
Unfortunately, I’ve not worked with that thermostat type before. At this point, I would doubt it’s possible without some custom parts to convert signals. Wish I had better news for you.

          Thanks,
          Michael

That’s what I figured is the case thanks for the quick response.
